Myrtle Hill

WALKING

From the house you can walk for miles in any direction. Turn left, keep going left and where the road turns sharp left, go straight up the hill in front of you. It is a fairly steep climb but soon you are up in the hills, seemingly miles from anywhere. Even in winter the walking is brilliant as most of the roads were built for farm traffic and so you hardly ever see a car, whilst keeping your feet dry.

Dinefwr Park - is a stunning National Trust estate with a great castle (in the care of Cadw). You can spend all day here or just pop in for tea.

Carreg Cennen - is set in dramatic surroundings and the walk around it is stunning (about 4 miles)

Tenby - is about 1 hour’s drive away but well worth the effort. The town is part medieval and part Georgian and the beaches are wonderful. Again, the walking is 1st class along the coastal path.

THE MONTHLY LIVESTOCK MARKET

This takes place in Llandeilo on the last Saturday of the month and is a great morning out. As well as the livestock auction, there is just about everything for sale. A great way to sample Carmarthenshire rural life.

BRECON

 About ½ hour’s drive away, Brecon is a lovely town with lovely riverside walks, a beautiful cathedral and lots of individual shops. The summer jazz festival is great fun.

BEACHES

The coasts of three counties are just a short drive away. One of our children’s favourite is the closest beach at Llanstephan, just south of Carmarthen. It is totally unspoilt and although you cannot swim due to the strong current at low tide, the water is warm for playing in, there are good rock pools at the back of the beach and a great fish and chip van. Walk south along the beach and you will come to Scot’s Bay, our absolute favourite, where you can follow the tide out, stamp on the sand, and collect cockles for your tea.

Other brilliant beaches are Pendine sands, Freshwater East, Tenby, and any of the beaches along the Pembrokeshire coast. Our favourite is Barafundle, voted the best picnic spot in Britain.

PEMBREY COUNTRY PARK

A great place for a day out, especially if you combine it with a visit to nearby Kidwelly castle, one of the best in the area.
Pembrey has all sorts of things to do; bikes for hire, short golf course etc. The beach there – Cefn Sidan – is 8 miles long and described as one of Europe’s best.

WETLAND CENTRE

We love this place and take both our grown up children and grandchildren there every time they visit.
You can feed the hundreds of ducks, join in with the activities, borrow bikes (refundable deposit required) to ride along the miles of lovely flat paths, take canoes out around the shallow lakes (free of charge) or just take a picnic and watch the birds. Don’t miss Water Vole City for the young ones – such a simple idea but our grandchildren can spend hours there.

LLYN Y FAN FACH

We had a wonderful afternoon here earlier this year with our three grandchildren.
A large stream comes down from the hills and splits into little rivulets. They spent hours trying to catch fish (no chance) and retrieving a ball thrown in upstream.
Nearby is the KITE FEEDING STATION where you can watch 50 or 60 Red Kites fight over the food which is put out for them daily. 3pm in Summer and 2pm in Winter.

THE NATION BOTANIC GARDEN OF WALES

A lovely day out for all the family, with lots of activities for children in the school holidays. Everyone we send there spends far longer than they had intended.

ABERGLASNEY GARDENS

Beautiful cloister gardens, recently restored with a good café.

MUSEUMS

It does rain sometimes but the national museums in Wales are really first class and free!
The nearest ones are the Wool Museum and the Waterfront Museum. St Fagans, near Cardiff is a fascinating open air museum and they are all well worth a visit even in the sunshine.
